After 2 seasons of not fielding a Pennants team, 2021 proved very successful for the Narrandera Golf Club by taking out the Final against Leeton at Ganmain on 16th May.

The team consisted of Scott Robertson (Capt), John Schofield, Steve Gehringer, Shaun Gehringer, Phil Williams, Paul Little, Bill Napper, Michael Stockdale, Dave Diggleman, Terry Trickett, Chris Walsh, Ben Powell, Mick Hethrington, Ian Donaldson & Garth Donaldson.

Round 1 saw us play at Junee where a mature and more experienced Narrandera outfit physically and mentally outplayed a talented but less experienced Southern Junior Golf Academy in their 1st taste of RDGA Pennants, with the final score 7-0 Narrandera’s way. Capt Robbo could see that an easy 1st up victory wasn’t good for the long term success of the team so he came up with a cunning and some what brave ploy not often seen in country golf - that is have his team play off the wrong handicaps next match!!! Knowing that his team are a little lazy and would not check their own handicaps, the next match against Kapooka at Wagga Country Club saw another strong “win” 7 – 0. Monday night came and the “mistake” was uncovered by Robbo & Yakka and the points rightly awarded to Kapooka..

The “refocus strategy” so cleverly hatched by Robbo then hit the team and from that point on, a steely resolve and take no prisoners attitude swept through the team and by the end of the season, not only had we gained a top 4 position but actually secured the Minor Premiership, and more importantly, a home semi final against Kapooka. This saw us again score a strong win and with Leeton defeating Wagga Country Club, the finalists were decided.

With the Final now on, Narrandera went in confident and match fit against a Leeton team that perhaps were a little underdone having only played six matches in their Semi Final after WCC failed to field a full team. Team selection is crucial any sport and as Pennant golf is a commitment that requires a lot of precious weekend time and with a lot of the team having young families, it was crucial that our wives, partners and families gave their support – which they did and they are sincerely thanked by the players (your loving partners!!)

Thanks to all the support from Narrandera Golf Club members and to the players, especially Scott Robertson who took over as Pennants Captain – his time and efforts in organising and managing player qualification, availability and transport and of course his master “planning” after Round 1 – BRILLIANT!!!!
